Alameda, CA: H. M. Clinton, Bookseller, Stationer, and Publisher. 1877. Circular vignetter woodcut, entitled "Eureka", to title page; 2 3/4" x 1 7/8"; original publisher's full brown leather with gilt stamped front board. 1st edition (Bradbury, p 203; Welsh 1553 [known only by the 1948 Argonaut Book Shop Catalogue No. 8]); not in Cowan; extremity wear and rubs, with largish chip to spine crown; a bit cocked; period poi to ffep; lacks rfep; overall very good copy. A very rare miniature, the first published in California; Cowan speculates that Bynon's "Business Directory of Oakland, Alameda & Berkeley", also 1877 has that distinction, however, examination of both volumes strongly suffests this title precedes the Directory [the title page of which states it includes this work], a conclusion shared by Bradbury, who lists this title first in the 3 Bynon miniatures contained in his reference, Antique United States Miniature Books, 1690 - 1900. Also, research leads us to believe this is the first book published in the city of Alameda, CA, a quaint town Bynon describes as "flourishing" & "advantageously situated on the bay of San Francisco..." No additional volumes were published. Per ABPC, no copies have come to auction over the last 30 years; not in the NUC & OCLC shows just 5 institutional holdings [only 1 outside CA].
